The findings of this systematic review (Billings et al., 2023) about psychosocial interventions after a traumatic incident in the workplace are fascinating:
The systematic review found that across 80 research studies and 11 clinical practice guidelines:
Generic de-briefing can result in a negative impact for staff
There were positive benefits to group interventions - it helped normalise experiences and reactions to high stress situations.
More targeted individual interventions such as EMDR may be beneficial.
Confidentiality was an important aspedct for participants engaging in therapeutic support.
The therapeutic support must be delievered by qualified professionals with expertise in trauma work.
It is so encouraging to see that the research evidence supports the work we are doing in ROAR Compassion. The beauty of GTEP (a group EMDR protocol) means that it can help staff process a collective trauma/stressful situation together in a normalising environment whilst also remaining private and confidential about each individual's experience and distress.
